Garden decking options
First of all it’s important to establish what your primary uses for the decking will be. If you would like to enjoy it as an alfresco dining space then it’s important you have easy access from the kitchen. If you are going to use the space for relaxation and for sun bathing you need to consider if the positioning of the decking will maximise access to the sun. An option for shade is also advised so you can enjoy it all year round. If you would like it as a play area for children then safety should be paramount, we always make considerations for non-slip surfaces and railings. Key considerations of decking, aside from the choice of the materials, should include usage, easy access, positioning, sunlight, shade, safety, maintenance and drainage.
Decked areas are often made from wood but occasionally, other materials may be used such as composite decking (mixture of wood shavings and plastic materials which is made strong from blasting at a high temperature). UPVC is another option and is fashioned to have the appearance of wood. In our opinion, wood decking is the best option for a natural look, which is also strong, durable and long lasting. Choosing the right type of wood for your decking can be daunting, as there are so many options. All of the decking planks we use are pressure treated, weather resistant and treated with a wood preservative on all end cuts. We prefer to use FSC wood (Forest Stewardship Council) which meets the highest environmental and social standards.
Decking planks can vary in price and colour. As an example Cedar Redwood is coloured with a reddish tinge whereas oak and pine are lighter in colour and will often have a yellow hue. It’s best to select a wood colour that matches as closely as possible to the adjacent exterior wall so it will be less obtrusive. However, you do have the option to paint or stain your wood if required. Another consideration is grooved planks versus flat planks. For more advice on decking options please feel free to call us, even if it’s just for advice.
In terms of overall design of the decking, you can be as creative as you want. From the size of the planks to the angles they are laid. We can even cut out sections to allow for planting which can add a splash of colour. We are even able to build decking around tress if required. Railings for safety and stairs for access can also be incorporated into your design. Decking on different levels can also work well if you have a garden on an incline.
Garden decking maintenance
Once fitted and varnished, your decking will require little maintenance. It will require occasional cleaning and removal of moss or other growth. We provide a pressure washing service, which will bring it back to life and make it look brand new. Every few years your decking will require a service in the form of sanding and then re varnishing or oiling; In some instances some of the screws may require tightening to prevent squeaking.
