The family garden in Muswell Hill, London N10, was designed by Catherine Cochrane and built by Acacia Gardens. Following a major house renovation, it was time for the outdoor space to be fully transformed Our team began with soil clearance and new drainage. Hard landscaping included paving, rebuilt rendered walls with copings, and integrated utilities for a fire pit and lighting, while a bespoke water feature divider created a striking focal point. Soft landscaping introduced a new lawn and layered planting beds, with provisions for future additions such as a summer house or hot tub. The finished garden balances practicality with a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Family Garden Build Key Features

Patio Extension Installation

We extended the patio by 3 meters and created new paved areas across two levels, using durable materials for longevity. Precise levels and jointing ensure proper drainage and a seamless connection with the house. The result is a robust and attractive surface that provides space for dining, entertaining, and everyday family life, while serving as the foundation for the garden.

Garden Seating Zones

We built two seating areas, created to enhance flexibility and enjoyment in the garden. The patio area immediately outside the house serves as a natural extension of the home, perfect for spontaneous gatherings, dining, or simply relaxing. At the far end of the garden, a second zone has been established as a dedicated social area or tranquil retreat, equipped with a sofa and firepit.

Water Feature Divider

We installed a customised water feature within a dividing wall to serve as both a focal point and a functional partition. Three spouts cascade water into a pebble bed, generating calming sounds and movement. On one side of the divider is a dining table, while the other hosts a sofa and a fire pit. This feature not only separates the two zones but also enhances the garden with character, elegance, and atmosphere.

Lighting Installation Scheme

A comprehensive lighting system was designed to extend the garden’s usability after dark. We added discreet cabling that we concealed during construction to ensure a tidy finish. Functional lights were installed along steps and pathways for safety, while accent lighting was positioned to highlight planting, the water feature, and architectural details. The end result is practical lighting with decorative appeal.

Reshaped Lawn Installation

Our team reshaped, and relaid the lawn to form a larger, level green centrepiece. Beneath the turf, we installed a new drainage system to prevent waterlogging and enhance long-term performance. The finished lawn offers a versatile space for family play, relaxation, and leisure. Its clean edges and ample size create harmony between the hard and soft elements.

Layered Boundary Planting

Part of our remit was to introduce planting around the garden boundaries to add softness, structure, and privacy. A layered palette of trees, shrubs, and perennials was selected to provide colour, texture, and interest throughout the seasons. This planting enhances biodiversity, supports wildlife, and offers a natural backdrop for the lawn and paved areas.

Herman Pobrati Managing Director Acacia Gardens

At Acacia Gardens, we pride ourselves on delivering complete garden builds with meticulous attention to detail. In Muswell Hill, we brought the garden designer’s plan to life by transforming a large, underused plot into a family-friendly garden that now feels both functional and welcoming. Acacia Gardens managed the entire garden construction from start to finish, coordinating hard and soft landscaping in-house. This project demonstrates how the right combination of hard and soft landscaping can create a garden that is both practical and enjoyable for years to come.
