Acacia Gardens has completed a low maintenance courtyard construction project in Hackney E5. The landscaping brings Sarah Kay’s stunning garden designs to life as she maximises the potential of a compact London courtyard, making it a beautiful place to relax and entertain. We were responsible for the construction part of this project, including patio installation, building a retainer wall with seating, installing a perimeter fence and crafting a bespoke storage cupboard. The result is a beautiful low maintenance garden that is dog friendly and perfect for socialising with friends and family.
Low Maintenance Courtyard Key Features
Sandstone Patio Installation
Acacia Gardens installed Khandler Sandstone paving to create two areas separated by granite setts. The main space was for a dining table, while the other included steps leading to a glass door to the rear of the property. We also inserted drainage slots in the paving.
Garden Brick Work
We built a brick wall raised bed to situate the perennials and additional planting, including ferns. Creating a seating area into the raised bed provides a spot to relax and a great place to position the dining table.
Fence Installation
We undertook the fence installation using a featheredge fence and batten trellis. The fence provides a layer of security and privacy for the homeowners. Painting the fence black adds a dramatic backdrop for the planting.
Bespoke Garden Storage
Acacia Gardens made a bespoke storage cupboard featuring a living roof. Painting the wood black to match the fence looks stunning. The storage sits outside the property’s back door for easy access and provides ample space for gardening tools and more.
Acacia Gardens enjoyed working with Sarah Kay. Her garden design was simple yet stunning and perfectly used the irregular shape outdoor space. The pared back use of materials were an excellent choice. Sarah included beautiful decorative touches such as an industrial style mirror and wall hanging planters. Having the bench built into the raised beds and creating a bespoke store cupboard were excellent ways to pack a lot into the small courtyard. Overall, it was a cosy courtyard garden.

Front garden construction hackney
The project also included construction of the front garden. Florence Dark Porcelain step and riser installation gave the stairs a smart appearance. Drainage was an important consideration due to the steps leading to a basement level. Rendering the retainer wall and adding a green roof to the bike shed were additional interesting touches.
