Wildlife-friendly oasis in E8
Acacia Gardens has completed a low-maintenance urban sanctuary garden in East London. Once again, we were privileged to work with garden designer Sarah Kay. The brief for this North facing garden was to create a haven for wildlife while providing a tranquil setting for the homeowners to relax. It is a compact plot, but Sarah’s design made the most of every corner to deliver a stunning urban garden in London Fields, E8. We carried out hard landscaping and soft landscaping services for this domestic landscaping project.

Urban Sanctuary Garden Key Features
Sandstone Patio Installation
Acacia Gardens installed Sandstone paving to create an angled patio designed to bring movement and flow to the compact garden. The patio allows for a dining table along with large container pots. Although the garden is compact, the warm colour paving gives the illusion of space and adds much needed light into the area.
Contemporary Materials
We worked with interesting contemporary materials (Jura Beige Limestone and Corten steel). The designer chose these to complement the modern extension and allow the colourful foliage and forms of the planting to stand out. Corten steel elements are repeated throughout the garden and as a facia for the raised beds.
Wildlife Attracting Plants
We added pollinator-attracting planting with striking colours and fragrance. The Boston Ivy on the back wall provides a habitat for wildlife. Birds are encouraged into the garden via a stone bird bath which adds a touch of decoration.
Venetian Fencing Installation
Acacia Gardens installed a wooden batten fence on both sides of the garden using Jackson’s Venetian Panels. These fencing panels are attractive and a natural backdrop to the planting. The simple design allows the garden privacy without feeling confined.

Her garden design transforms a dark, North Facing plot in East London into a wildlife haven and oasis.
Sarah uses clever tricks to add the illusion of space, like the large curved topped mirror and the Venetian fencing.
The garden is elegant and striking by incorporating exciting materials and a rich planting colour palette.
A Corten steel screens the compost bin, which looks like a piece of art; Sarah thinks of everything when designing a garden.
The end result certainly gives the homeowners a fantastic view from their patio doors.
